Why digital employee experience matters

Working technology.
Better working lives.

A device can be technically healthy while the person using it still struggles. DEX connects what systems report with what employees actually experience and turns the evidence into better decisions. Not all health scores are created equal: what is measured, weighted and missed can change the picture completely.

Find the friction IT doesn't connect the dots about.

Slow sign-ins, faults, unreliable meetings, inaccessible workflows and repeated interruptions often never become tickets. The technical delay is only part of the story. People lose their train of thought, switch context and work to recover their place. Understanding patterns across roles and locations exposes that hidden cost.

Pair telemetry with the employee voice.

Performance metrics tell part of the story. People tell us whether the tools really support their tasks, how often they are interrupted, what effort it takes to recover and whether the proposed improvement helps. Surveys, contextual feedback and direct conversations help connect the dots.

Make improvement an operating habit.

Good DEX is more than a dashboard. It joins diagnosis to service ownership, safe remediation, employee engagement and repeated checks of what people can actually do. A faster machine only matters if work gets easier.

THE HUMAN COST OF DIGITAL FRICTION

The interruption ends. The cognitive cost may not.

When an application freezes or a call fails, people have to stop, troubleshoot or ask for help, then reconstruct the work they were doing. Context switching and attention residue are part of the employee experience, even when a device health score is green.

Observed work patterns25m 26s

Average elapsed time before people resumed the same work activity in a 2005 field study. This is not 25 minutes of lost productivity per interruption.

Attention residue

Focus does not switch instantly.

Research shows unfinished tasks can leave attention tied to the earlier work, affecting performance on the next task.

Stress and effort

Working faster has a cost.

In an interruption experiment, people compensated by speeding up but experienced more stress, frustration, time pressure and effort.

What Rohall measures: interruption frequency, affected task, delay, recovery effort, work completion and employee feedback. These findings inform Return on Employee (ROE), with customer-specific evidence rather than a universal minutes-lost multiplier.

THE FIELD IS MOVING

DEX is becoming a management discipline, not just an endpoint tool.

In 2026, Forrester mapped a landscape of 17 DEXM suppliers and Gartner published another dedicated evaluation of DEX management tools. The emphasis now includes sentiment, measurable outcomes and governed remediation - not simply collecting more device data.

54%of business and IT leaders in Forrester's 2025 survey said DEX sits within IT.
20%said they had a dedicated DEX team. Cross-functional ownership remains an opportunity.
A GROWING PRIORITY

Forrester also reported that 67% of digital workplace services decision-makers planned increased spending in its 2024 research. That signals investment intent for the broader workplace services category, not a DEX software market-size forecast.

The challenge beyond the dashboard

Why good digital initiatives
struggle to make an impact.

A DEX platform cannot assign accountability, persuade a board, change a support process or earn employee trust by itself. These are organisational challenges as much as technical ones.

01 / OWNERSHIP

Everyone supports DEX. Nobody owns the outcome.

Sponsors, service owners and delivery teams may all have a different definition of success. Rohall helps establish decision rights, priorities and an improvement rhythm.

02 / LEADERSHIP ADOPTION

IT, HR and executives are not aligned.

Real change needs more than employee training. Leaders need a clear reason to invest, HR and communications need a voice, and IT teams need practical processes they can sustain.

03 / DEEP ROOT CAUSE

Problems bounce between tools and support tiers.

A first-line fix cannot always explain a complex third-line problem. Cross-platform diagnosis, engineering judgement and ownership of the underlying cause matter.

04 / TRANSFORMATION

The project went live. The change never landed.

OS, application, EUC and workplace migrations create technical, behavioural and communication dependencies. We assess readiness, adoption and real-world impact.

05 / EMPLOYEE VOICE

The metrics are green, but people are frustrated.

Telemetry, listening, communication reach and employee journeys need to tell one coherent story before improvement priorities can be trusted.

06 / COMMERCIAL PROOF

The investment has no defensible business case.

Unused software, over-specified devices, repeat incidents and wasted employee time become prioritised, testable opportunities - with assumptions made explicit.

THE EVIDENCE

More tools do not automatically create a better workplace.

These are survey findings and illustrative models from their respective publishers, not claims about every organisation. They help identify questions worth investigating.

42%

of IT professionals reported investing in DEX solutions while still struggling with monitoring and automation.

57%

reported that leaders say DEX matters but provide little practical support.

74%

reported evidence of overlapping or redundant IT technology.

For context, a 2024 market study forecast DEX management software growth from $1.32bn in 2023 to $2.97bn in 2030 (12.3% compound annual growth). Separately, Lakeside's 2022 survey found 36% of respondents had considered leaving their employer due to poor digital experience. The former is a forecast; the latter is an older survey response, not a prediction of actual resignations.

What could your digital friction be costing?

Ivanti modelled nearly $4m in annual productivity exposure for a hypothetical 2,000-person organisation, assuming 1.6 lost hours per employee each month and a $100 fully loaded hourly cost. The actual impact depends on your workforce, work patterns and verified data. A Rohall-specific impact modelling tool is on our roadmap.

Selected engagements, anonymised

Real problems. Practical interventions.

These examples are drawn from Robin's work in earlier roles, not contracts held by Rohall. Open a story to see the risk, approach, result and positive business outcome. Sector labels are intentionally broad.

ENERGY & UTILITIES / HARDWAREBreaking the automatic four-year refresh cycleWhy replace equipment that still performs well - or keep devices whose firmware presents a risk?
Problem and risk
A fixed refresh policy, replacement monitors and docking stations were driving unnecessary expenditure without reflecting actual device condition or employee needs.
Intervention
Compared real device performance with age, vendor support and firmware state. Examined multi-monitor usage, higher-quality equipment life, shared stock and alternative display/hub configurations.
Result
The reported refresh proposal reduced planned spend by approximately 75%. Additional options addressed monitor reuse, energy demand and simpler desks.
Positive business outcome
Lower planned capital expenditure, better targeting of replacements and a longer evidence-led asset lifecycle.
Software & Hardware Optimisation / AO-02Device lifecycleCost and sustainability
FINANCIAL SERVICES / TECHNICAL ESCALATIONA slow sign-in that wasn't really a VDI problemA secure workplace deployment had stubborn delays despite several teams investigating it.
Problem and risk
Physical and virtual users faced prolonged start-up and sign-in times, disrupting access and delaying a wider workplace initiative.
Intervention
Investigated the start-up sequence across the endpoint, virtual desktop stack and third-party components rather than restricting diagnosis to a single product.
Result
Isolated a software interaction during boot, giving the teams a specific root cause to address.
Positive business outcome
Removed ambiguity between suppliers and accelerated a targeted engineering response.
DEX Analysis & Intelligence / DX-03IT Ops / IT-02Sign-in and root cause
PUBLIC SECTOR / CLOUD TRANSFORMATIONChecking network readiness before a major migrationA change to cloud productivity services was more than an application deployment.
Problem and risk
Distributed offices had widely different connectivity. Proceeding without understanding local capacity risked a poor experience after migration.
Intervention
Used estate and site data to evaluate the network capacity needed for a move to cloud productivity applications, feeding findings into migration planning.
Result
Identified sites requiring connectivity upgrades before the change could be considered ready.
Positive business outcome
Better-informed investment and a lower-risk programme, with employee experience considered ahead of cutover.
Digital Workplace Performance / WP-04Transformation readinessNetwork capacity
RETAIL / MOBILE DEVICESWhy handheld scanners kept failingIt looked like a hardware or software fault. The underlying issue was elsewhere.
Problem and risk
Retail handheld devices were stalling during everyday tasks, requiring disruptive restarts and creating uncertainty about replacement options.
Intervention
Analysed performance in the working environment and the relationship between task failures and available wireless connectivity.
Result
Identified inadequate local Wi-Fi coverage as the immediate source of interrupted work, rather than treating every scanner as a defective endpoint.
Positive business outcome
A focused remediation path for store connectivity and more informed procurement decisions.
DEX Analysis & Intelligence / DX-02IT Ops / IT-02Mobile workforce
ENERGY / ENDPOINT GOVERNANCEFinding endpoint risks the management reports missedA device being present in the estate did not mean its firmware and patch state were safe.
Problem and risk
Conventional endpoint management reporting gave an incomplete view of firmware and software compliance.
Intervention
Cross-checked actual device state, identified long-missed BIOS and patch updates, and linked exceptions to practical governance actions.
Result
Exposed a wider set of devices needing intervention and informed a more reliable patch and endpoint assurance process.
Positive business outcome
Reduced unmanaged risk and more dependable evidence for IT and security decision-makers.
Endpoint Assurance / EA-01ComplianceEndpoint assurance
HEALTHCARE / VIRTUAL WORKSPACEMaking virtual desktop plans fit real clinic connectionsA technically sound design still depended on whether individual sites could support it.
Problem and risk
Primary-care locations had highly variable network readiness during connectivity and virtual desktop changes.
Intervention
Assessed site connectivity and its implications for VDI, remote access and healthcare applications, then provided evidence for programme leaders.
Result
Identified locations where available bandwidth fell short of the proposed solution's practical requirements.
Positive business outcome
Better sequencing of infrastructure decisions and reduced risk of an unusable clinical workspace.
Digital Workplace Performance / WP-01Workplace readinessHealthcare
PUBLIC SECTOR / SERVICE OPERATIONSGiving frontline support the context to solve moreService desks needed actionable information, not another complex analytics console.
Problem and risk
First- and second-line support teams lacked a single, task-focused picture for diagnosing recurring user issues and progressing incidents.
Intervention
Helped shape a targeted support interface combining relevant endpoint information, incident context and bounded automation for common repairs.
Result
Created a clearer route from a user-reported issue to investigation, ticket handling and repeatable support actions.
Positive business outcome
More useful data at the point of support and a practical foundation for reduced handling effort.
IT Ops / IT-04Service designSupport enablement
ENTERPRISE / SOFTWARE INVESTMENTMaking software estate data earn its keepA paid asset-management process was not delivering confidence or decisions.
Problem and risk
Separate tools and incomplete software intelligence were adding cost without providing sufficiently useful insight.
Intervention
Used existing endpoint and application data to support licensing decisions and assess redundant software inventory capabilities.
Result
Supported the removal of overlapping software-management expenditure and improved the relevance of data available to teams.
Positive business outcome
Lower recurring supplier cost and stronger investment decisions. Precise commercial figures are withheld pending approval.

Why work with Rohall

Your outcomes.
Not a vendor's agenda.

I'm Robin Southall. I've sat with engineers, service teams, vendors, partners and executives - and I've seen where good technology gets stuck between them. Rohall brings that whole perspective to your organisation.

THE ROHALL PRINCIPLE

The right answer may be a new platform, a better way to use what you already own, or a change in the way teams work together.

Independent judgement, measurable outcomes
01 / PLATFORM-AGNOSTIC

Start with your problem.

Assess SysTrack, Nexthink, ControlUp or other options against the people, systems and outcomes you have. Recommendations can include better use of existing tools, better processes - or no new purchase.

02 / CROSS-FUNCTIONAL

More than telemetry.

DEX, EUC, mobile, ITSM, automation, customer success, employee communications and change adoption all affect the experience. Connecting those disciplines is where the value appears.

03 / ENTERPRISE-TESTED

Boardroom to service desk.

Two decades working across government, healthcare, finance and global enterprise environments - from solution architecture and hands-on technical delivery to strategic programmes and international teams.

04 / ACCOUNTABLE

Advice you can challenge.

Clear assumptions, useful deliverables and measures agreed with you. An advisory engagement isn't tied to a supplier's renewal or upsell target. If a sourcing or referral arrangement is involved, it's disclosed.

A vendor customer-success team

Often brings excellent depth on its own technology, product adoption and roadmap.

A delivery or managed-service provider

Can bring scale and operational capacity within an agreed service scope.

Rohall's independent role

Connects multiple platforms, business priorities, employee realities and the commercial case - with the freedom to question the original plan.

Experience behind the methodology

I developed Velocity.
Then took the thinking further.

At Lakeside Software, I developed the Velocity Framework - an approach to making endpoint intelligence useful beyond reports and dashboards, through structured, outcome-led customer engagements. Lakeside formally launched it in 2023.

I kept coming back to a gap that traditional Customer Success did not fully solve. What happens after deployment? Who owns the business outcome? How do support, engineering, executives, HR and internal communications work together? And who checks whether the change made life better for employees?

That is the foundation of my DEXOps thinking today. Rohall's Impact Blueprints are being written independently for a broader, platform-agnostic approach - connecting technical evidence, organisational change, adoption and positive business outcomes.

About me · Robin Southall

Big-picture thinking.
Technical credibility.

I'm Robin, the founder of Rohall Technologies and the person you'll speak to about a project. I've spent more than 20 years in enterprise IT, moving from hands-on technical roles and solution architecture into Director-level leadership across digital employee experience, customer strategy and service delivery.

My experience spans enterprise-scale digital workplace transformation, end-user computing strategy and major operating system, application and infrastructure migrations, including a 120,000-seat public-sector programme. It covers Microsoft 365, Azure, Intune, VMware, Citrix, AVD and Windows 365; endpoint and mobile management; SysTrack and other DEX intelligence; IT operations and service desk transformation; hardware and software optimisation; governance and compliance; and complex technical escalations across multiple suppliers. I have also shaped executive transformation roadmaps, enabled partners and helped large organisations turn technology investment into adoption and measurable outcomes.

At Lakeside Software, I developed the Velocity Framework to connect technical insight with customer outcomes. At Firstup, I worked in employee communications and engagement - another side of the same experience problem. I've also built and led international teams and worked with senior executives, engineers, customer success teams and systems integrators.

Rohall lets me bring those perspectives together independently. I want clients to know what is happening, why it matters, what we can realistically improve and how we'll tell whether it worked. Away from consulting, I'm developing Buddy and Hektyk, which keep me hands-on with interfaces, accessibility and product decisions.
